LJ Archiving
You may have heard that LiveJournal just had some severe layoffs (20 out of 28 people, though I can't imagine their entire paid staff is only 28 people), and that the blog bubble has burst and LJ's days are numbered. (Article link)
The truth of it is that they did lay off a lot of people, but that the doom and gloom is premature. (Article link) (Official LJ Press Release) ("Don't Panic")
A lot of people are still erring on the side of caution by setting up "meeting places" on other networks and archiving their journals. The latter is never a bad idea, really, so if you want to do it, here's some links.
http://www.livejournal.com/export.b ml - Lets you download it month by month in XML OR Excel formats. A lot quicker than it looks, I did a total of fifteen years worth of various journals in less than fifteen minutes.
http://www.ljbook.com - Downloads your entire journal in PDF format. It takes a while, though, and they're a bit slammed right now.
http://www.livejournal.com/download/ - LJ recommends some downloading/archiving clients.
http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/2840 83.html - Another Windows option.
http://antennapedia.livejournal.com/238 132.html - This one is a Mac OS option.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Co ntent - I'm not sure, someone handed me this link.
http://hewgill.com/ljdump/ - Yet another Windows program.
http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/ - And one more Windows program, which is supposedly quite awesome.
If you dare to enter a furry community (the post is safe for work), someone has complied a bunch of article links on the issue of LJ's layoffs and future.
